Students of the NSS wing of Angappa College spent their weekend in a very thoughtful way as they volunteered to clean the shores of Kurichi Lake on the outskirts of Coimbatore. This initiative was supported by the 'Save Kurichi Organization '.
Nearly 200 students volunteered to clean the banks of the Kuruchi river which was filled with dirt and left-over trash. A whopping load of non-degradable plastic materials were collected which was close to a ton. The cleaning drive aims at creating an awareness among the youth to protect the water resources in the city.

The collected trash were filled in bio-gradable plastic bags which was later collected from the spot by the Corporation truck. Post cleaning the banks of the Kuruchi lake wore a fresh look sans dirt. The passers-by and the residents of that area were exceedingly impressed at the cleaning drive by the students, which also instilled a sense of responsibility to maintain cleanliness in all water resources.
Similar cleaning drives have been planned at all water resources, as deposition of bio-degradable wastes is proven to cause alarming environmental degradation. Importantly, these water bodies are the nesting home for many species of birds including migratory birds which lay eggs along the shores and fly back as a family to their home grounds. Uncleaned trash is regarded to be a grave threat to these birds as they mistakenly feed on the plastic wastes and die.
Along with the volunteers, the responsibility of protecting the environment vests also with the public. Definitely, the cognizance of the students will kindle thoughts amongst the public to refrain from dumping wastes along the shores of water bodies.
