Coimbatore: Farmers, potters and the public can lift alluvial soil from water bodies after submitting an application to authorities concerned, said the District Collector in a press release.

On April 28, 2017 Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Edapadi K Palanisamy approved procurement of free alluvial soil for farmers and potters.

"The potters registered under the 1983 act Tamil Nadu Co-operative Society under section 30, members of the public and farmers who want to make use of the alluvial soil can obtain it from the ponds, lakes which are under the maintenance of the Rural Development Department and Public Works Department", the releases added.

As per the release, farmers holding 1 acre wetland can take 75 cubic meter of alluvial soil and dry land farmers can take 90 cubic meter, 60 cubic meter for potters and 30 cubic meter for personal use can also be taken free of cost, after obtaining permission from respective Tahsildars.

“By this exercise, the farmers can use the nutrient-rich alluvial soil in their fields for agriculture purposes and minimise use of artificial enhancers to boost the nutrient value of the soil. The de-silting exercise will help to increase percolation and water storage in the ponds", the Collector noted.

“In order to streamline the distribution, monitoring officials will be appointed under the guidance of the Sub Collector” the release added.
