Forest Dept. prohibits devotees from trekking in Coimbatore's Velliangiri Hills due to wildlife movement

Owing to the intense summer heat, the Forest Department has banned trekking for devotees citing that wildlife tends to roam the Velliangiri Hills in search of water and food.

Coimbatore: Every year, during the Shivaratri and Chitra Pavurnami festivals, devotees from different districts visit the Poondi Velliangiri Hills which is part of the Poluvampatti Wildlife Sanctuary in Coimbatore.

During the full moon and festive seasons, the Forest Department permits devotees to trek to the mountain. Even as the festive season has drawn to a close, the intense summer heat drives wildlife in the region to roam the Velliangiri Hills in search of water and food.

The Forest Department has thus banned devotees from trekking to the Velliangiri Hills. The Forest Department has requested complete cooperation from the public in this regard.
