Property tax due by March 2022 next year must be paid within 3 days; Traders, businessmen, industrialists shocked by Corporation Commissioner's order

Traders, businessmen and industrialists are shocked at the Corporation Commissioner's orders to pay property tax due by March 2022 next year within the next 3 days

Coimbatore: Traders, businessmen and industrialists have been caught unawares and are in shock at the order issued by the Corporation Commissioner regarding the payment of property tax.

Commenting on the order, traders, merchants and industrialists opine, "The industrial city of Coimbatore district plays a vital role in the industrial development of Tamil Nadu. Property tax for the first half of the year is usually paid before September. The property tax for the next half year, upto March will be paid thereafter.

In a situation where traders and merchants are currently facing various crises due to the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, it would be inappropriate to ask them to pay property tax for the first half year. But the act of issuing notices to pay property tax within three days for the period upto March 2022 next year has caused great dissatisfaction and confusion among traders."

"There are already several hundred crores of rupees as property tax arrears for the last year. Action must be taken to collect them. In view of the current crisis situation, the Corporation administration should take steps to ensure we pay the first half of the property tax dues and then give us time till September. We have decided to bring this matter to the attention of the Chief Minister and Ministers of Tamil Nadu. It is to be noted that the state governments have offered to waive property taxes in states including Maharashtra and Karnataka in view of Covid-19," they added.
