The IMD’s red alert means authorities should be prepared for weather extreme. Forecasts suggest isolated heavy rainfall across all the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, as well as Coimbatore and the Nilgiris.
Following incessant rainfall on Sunday, the district administration had declared holiday for all educational institutions in Nilgiris, Coimbatore districts. With red alert announced now, the district administration might extend holiday tomorrow, Tuesday, based on the severity of the rains tonight.
Most parts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry will experience very heavy rain for the next two days. Especially Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, few places in northern districts like Nilgiris, Coimbatore are expected to experience very heavy rains accompanied with thunderstorms.
Also districts like Cuddalore, Viluppuram, Tirunelveli, Vellore, Salem, Madurai, Theni, Dindugal, Erode and Tirupur will experience heavy rains, according to regional meteorological department, Chennai.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert warning of heavy rains tomorrow in Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul, Kerala and southern Karnataka.
