An 8 to 10-year-old female elephant was found dead near Melmudi forest area under Thadagam North Range in Coimbatore. A post-mortem examination identified severe intestinal blockage as the primary cause of death, while samples have been sent for further laboratory analysis.
Coimbatore: An approximately 8 to 10-year-old female elephant was found dead in the forest area under the Thadagam North Range of the Thudiyalur division in the Coimbatore Forest Circle on Wednesday, September 23. The elephant was found to have died due to a severe intestinal blockage.
Forest officials received information around 10:30 am that a female elephant had collapsed and died due to ill health at a location about two kilometres from the Melmudi forest area, which falls under the Thadagam North Range.
Following the information, forest personnel rushed to the spot, secured the carcass and took necessary protective measures.
As per the directions of the District Forest Officer, a post-mortem examination was conducted under the supervision of the Assistant Forest Conservator of the Coimbatore Forest Range.
A medical team comprising the Forest Veterinary Officer from the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve and the Assistant Veterinarian from the 24 Veerapandi Veterinary Hospital conducted the post-mortem examination.
Investigations revealed that the elephant was estimated to be between 8 and 10 years old, with a severe intestinal blockage identified as the primary cause of death.
Blood and internal organ samples have been sent to the laboratory for further analysis, with the findings awaited.
