Coimbatore: The Citizen’s Voice Coimbatore has written a petition to the secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways seeking a reminder 2 months in advance for the license holders to renew their driving license.
The President of Citizen’s Voice Coimbatore and the Secretary in a statement conveyed that the organization has written to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. They have demanded a 2-month advance reminder for the license holders on their license renewal and also the facility to shift their Indian license to the country a person is living in, in case of employment purposes like the US, UK, Middle East.
The petition stated, “As you are aware, the driving licenses for individuals are issued with varying validity ranging from 5 to 10 years after which it shall be renewed by the individual through the Regional Transport Office concerned. To support the issue/renewal of the driving license and other matters related to motor vehicles and transportation, the Government of India has developed and implemented the web portal of “Parivahan Sewa”, which is a great help and relief.”
The issue CVC brought forth was that the onus of timely renewal of the driving license is vested with the individual. However, there are many cases of delayed renewal of the license due to the complacency of the individual and/or other inconveniences due to them being out of the country, etc. While conceding the fact that timely renewal is the license holders’ responsibility, taking the help of the technology it may be worthwhile to evolve a system by which a reminder may be sent 2 months in advance to the individual for which all the contact details are available in the web portal.
“Also, there are many instances when the Indian driving license holders living abroad due to employment, etc., are unable to renew the license even after the grace period allowed by the government. This is particularly so, during these times of the pandemic when individuals are unable to travel due to many restrictions. You may kindly consider further extension of time for renewal from the currently permitted one year.”
Many countries have the system of exchanging the driving license issued by one country with another country. For example, the US / UK driving licenses are exchanged by many countries viz., Canada, Mexico, many Middle Eastern Countries, etc. They added that the Government of India may consider this if not already in place.
