Two people robbed of Rs.10 Lakhs using fake bank websites in Coimbatore

The City Crime branch police are on the hunt for the fraudsters who robbed Rs.10 lakhs from two different people making them believe their bank accounts have been blocked.


Coimbatore: Two people in Coimbatore were robbed of Rs.10 lakhs using fake bank websites.

Unnikrishnan, (51), is the son of Kumar of Coimbatore Ganapathi Mookambikai Nagar area. Unnikrishnan received a message a few days back stating his State Bank of India bank account had been frozen and the PAN Card and personal details were immediately needed to revive it. A link was also sent to upload the details. Believing this, Unnikrishnan filled in the details as the window that opened resembled exactly the bank’s website.

Shortly afterward, Rs.9,93,206 was debited from his account in multiple instalments and upon contacting the bank the fraud came to light. Unnikrishnan lodged a complaint with the Coimbatore city cyber crime police station. Police have registered a case on the complaint and are investigating.

Similarly, Durairaj, (50), son of Chinnamalai Gounder of Kalapatti Thirumurugan Nagar area of Coimbatore, received a message asking him to update the details including PAN card to the bank account. He then clicked on the link and filled out the details asked for, while a message was received that Rs.60,000 had been withdrawn from his bank account.

As he checked with the bank he realized he was cheated. Durairaj has subsequently lodged a complaint with Coimbatore city cyber crime police station. Police have registered a case on the complaint and are investigating.
