Coimbatore: A 24-year-old boy died while trekking the Velliangiri hills in Coimbatore on the occasion of Mahashivratri.

Devotees from different parts of Coimbatore trek the 7 Velliangiri hills during Mahashivratri. The devotees visit the Suyambu Lingam, Lord Shiva on mountain 7. The trekking ban was lifted after two years and devotees have started climbing for the past 2 days to offer darshan to Lord Swayambu Linga on the 7th hill in the Poondi Vellangiri Range of Coimbatore on the occasion of Maha Shivratri.

Forest department employees are also engaged in security operations. Devotees climb carrying a bamboo stick in their hands. Reportedly, Palanivel (24) of Periyurpatti in Dindigul district arrived to offer darshan to Swayambulinga Swami on the occasion of Mahashivratri. He climbed the hill with his friends last evening.

Palanivel fainted near the Paambatti Siddhar Cave on mountain 3 and his friends accompanied first aid. However, he suddenly had a seizure and succumbed on the spot.

His friends then brought Palanivel's body to the foot of the hill. They also informed the Alanthurai police. Police arrived at the spot and recovered Palanivel's body and sent him to Coimbatore government hospital for post-mortem. They have also registered a case and are investigating.
