Vellalore Dumpyard: Corporation plans to place sensors among the garbage dump to detect fires early

As the summer heat increases, methane and other gases build up in the garbage dump, which can lead to fires. In order to avoid this, it is planned to place sensors soon with the help of technology to know the amount of methane and heat is gathering among the debris.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation has planned to place sensors among the garbage to prevent a fire at the Vellalore garbage depot.

There is a 650-acre landfill owned by the corporation on Chettipalayam Road under the Coimbatore Vellalore Municipality. Garbage collected in all the 100-wards in Coimbatore is dumped in this dumpyard.

Due to the accumulation of excessive amount of garbage, there are occasional fires here. As the debris collects in the same area, the fire spreads rapidly, creating a black smoke haze and deep stench most of the time. As a result, about 50,000 people living in the surrounding areas are suffering from respiratory ailments, including shortness of breath.

The Rs.60-crore bio-mining project was implemented to remove the garbage. According to a corporation official, between 2,000 and 2,500 cubic meters of garbage is disposed of daily. Now it is planned to place sensors between the garbage to prevent a fire at the dumpyard.

A corporation official said, "As the summer heat increases, methane and other gases build up in the garbage dump, which can lead to fires. In order to avoid this, it is planned to place sensors soon with the help of technology to know the amount of methane and heat is gathering among the debris.''
