Power loom owners strike enters day 31 in Coimbatore, Tirupur; Tripartite talks end in failure

The strike against non-provision of the agreed wage for the power loom owners, has been continuing for the thirty-first day, affecting the jobs of 4 lakh labourers directly and indirectly, with a loss of production worth at least Rs 1800 crores, after the tripartite talks ended in a failure

Coimbatore: The power loom owners strike demanding wage rise has entered 31st day after the tripartite talks ended in a failure.

Power loom owners in Tirupur and Coimbatore district are on an indefinite strike demanding the agreed wage hike for the sector, which the cloth producers have been refusing to provide.

The power loom owners demanded the Tamil Nadu government to intervene to end the strike and make sure that they are provided with the agreed wage hike.

The strike that began on January 9 has now entered day 31, after the tripartite talks, between the power loom owners, cloth producers, and the government, held at the Tirupur Collectorate, chaired by Collector Vineeth, that lasted 8 hours, ended in a failure. The textile manufacturers have disagreed with providing the wage hike.

Textile production worth Rs 1800 crore has been affected and 4 lakh workers have lost their jobs directly and indirectly. Meeting the press, Somanur power loom Owners Association president Palaniswami said wages have remained un-increased since 2014 and the prices of all raw materials and basic commodities have increased manifold. But, he said textile manufacturers were refusing to give wage hike and the strike would continue as talks had failed and the next phase of the agitation would be announced in consultation with the joint committee meeting.
