Social activists demand extra monitoring at 4 newly-upgraded Municipalities in Coimbatore to prevent irregularities

Social activists have demanded additional scrutiny at the four newly-upgraded Municipalities in the city even as they go into polls, to prevent irregularities.

Coimbatore: The four newly-upgraded Municipalities comprising Karumathampatti, Gudalur, Madukkarai and Karamadai in Coimbatore will be going to the polls for the first time. People seem to be highly enthusiastic for their first leader in these areas.

In the four newly-formed Municipalities in Coimbatore, there is fierce rivalry among DMK-AIADMK party functionaries in the electoral arena over who will take charge as the first President of the Municipality.

Karumathampatti, Gudalur, Madukkarai and Karamadai, which were town panchayats in Coimbatore district were upgraded to Municipalities. Since 50 percent of the local bodies have been allotted to women in these polls, women's groups and women's organizations are actively engaged in election work.

At the same time, activists have demanded that the State Election Commission should pay extra attention to these four Municipalities and conduct elections fairly.
