Support equipment worth ₹ 73-lakh was handed over to the differently-abled beneficiaries in the city at the Social Empowerment Camp held in Kuniyamuthur.


Coimbatore: Support equipment worth 73-lakh was distributed to the differently-abled beneficiaries in the city at the Social Empowerment Camp held in Kuniyamuthur.



The camp was held at Kuniyamuthur Government Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore on behalf of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities of the Ministry of Social Justice.



Coimbatore District Collector G S Sameeran and Pollachi MP Shanmugasundaram participated in the camp and distributed equipment worth 73-lakh to 88 beneficiaries.



This included hearing aids, gaming kit, three wheelers for differently-abled persons.



Speaking on the occasion, District Collector said that more than 50,000 differently-abled persons have been issued the UDID- differently-abled Identity Cards in Coimbatore district and welfare assistance has been provided to them.



Also speaking on the occasion, Pollachi MP Shanmugasundaram said, "Seminars and awareness camps should be conducted for differently-abled persons on a constituency-wise basis in each assembly constituency. The central government is ready to grant concessions and subsidies. Plans to conduct awareness campaigns for differently-abled persons in at least two places for each assembly constituency after the impact of the pandemic is reduced will be facilitated.”

He informed that the District Administration will make efforts to reach at least 1,000 differently-abled persons in each assembly constituency. The government has introduced separate schemes for the brain-stunted.

A sum of 1,000 per month is given to students from class 1 to 6 with differently-abled identity cards, 2,000 per month to class VI to IX students and 3,000 per month to class IX to XII students, while many are yet to receive their ID cards.

Loan assistance is also provided to differently-abled persons to start their business.

Experts echo the sentiments that such camps have to be conducted every year in Coimbatore to ensure that the benefits reach the 1,000 differently abled persons in each assembly constituency.
