Animal remains set afire at District Forest Office in North Coimbatore

More than 600 bones, claws and teeth of more than two dozen dead animals were set on fire at the District Forest Office in North Coimbatore on Friday.



Coimbatore: Over 600 bones, claws and teeth of dead animals from the Coimbatore forest area were burnt at the District Forest Office in North Coimbatore on Friday. Under the Wildlife Act, it is an offense for anyone to preserve or store the remains of dead wildlife, especially the teeth, ivory, bones, and claws.

If anyone is caught transporting such items from one place to another, it becomes an offense under the Wildlife Law Section. Hence, wildlife parts recovered in forest areas are set afire in the presence of forest officials and forest activists in order to prevent such incidents.



In this regard, as per the order of the Chief Forest Officer and Wildlife Conservator, Chennai, "All the various items such as ivory, tiger horns, deer skin, leopard teeth have been captured and preserved for five years in seven forest areas including Coimbatore, such as Perianiackenpalayam, Karamadai, Mettupalayam, Sirumugai, Madukkarai, Poluvampatti and other forest areas.

More than 600 bones, nails, teeth and horns were burnt today in the presence of the Coimbatore Forest Conservator Ramasubramaniam, District Forest Officer Ashok Kumar and Forest Extension Officer Dinesh Kumar.



Senthil, the leader of 'Osai,' Jalaluddin, the leader of Nature Conservation Society and several other forest rangers were also present at the spot.
