Coimbatore Corporation assures provision of alternative land for overhead tank construction at Govt. School

The Deputy Commissioner of Corporation has assured that an alternative land will be provided for the construction of the overhead tank at the Ramanathapuram Government High School after former students and various others opposed it.

Coimbatore: The Deputy Commissioner of Corporation, M Sharmila assured that an alternative land will be provided for the construction of the overhead tank at the Ramanathapuram Government High School.

After facing continuous opposition from former students and various political parties, the Deputy Commissioner of the Coimbatore Corporation stated that an alternative land will be provided for the construction of the overhead tank at the Ramanathapuram Government High School ground in Coimbatore.

The Students' Federation of India submitted a petition to the District Collector G S Sameeran in protest against the overhead tank construction and to the District Deputy Commissioner, Coimbatore to provide an alternative place for the construction of the reservoir. They stated that constructing the tank has destroyed trees in the school and will also affect the sports spirit of students.

The petition stated, “The Government Higher Secondary School, Ramanathapuram, Coimbatore has been functioning for more than 70 years and about 700 students are currently studying. The tank construction works have uprooted various trees in the school and the students are affected due to lack of space to play, thus dampening their gaming spirit.”

The SFI District Committee urged the corporation to take steps to protect the school grounds by replacing the Corporation water tank at the school grounds, elsewhere.

On receiving the petition, the Deputy Commissioner assured that the Corporation of Coimbatore has decided to provide an alternative site for the construction. The Coimbatore South MLA, Vanathi Srinivasan has also petitioned along with a map to provide an alternative place for the construction of the tank at the request of the former students.

Taking to her Twitter handle, she said, "The people of Coimbatore are strongly opposing the commencement of work to construct an overhead tank at Ramanathapuram Government School grounds. We have to stop trying to take the school grounds even if there is an alternative location," she added, tagging the District Collector of Coimbatore and the District Commissioner of Coimbatore on her Twitter handle.
