Forest department confirms that elusive leopard will not be injected with anesthesia

The forest department has stated that the leopard will be caught by tonight and have dropped plans to inject the animal with anesthesia. The animal is hiding in a dilapidated godown.

Coimbatore: The forest department has stated that the leopard will be caught by tonight and have dropped plans to inject the animal with anesthesia. The animal is hiding in a dilapidated godown.

Regional Conservator of Forests Ramasubramaniyam stated to the press that the leopard hiding in a godown in PK Pudur will be trapped by Tuesday night.

The predator hunted down dogs in the Kuniyamuthur area and had been a nuisance to the public. At around 8 am yesterday, the leopard was found lying in a private godown in the P.K.Pudur area next to Kuniyamuthur.

The veterinarian team dropped the idea to trap the animal by injecting sedative after reviews, as the animal was stuck inside a dilapidated godown. It is decided to wait for the leopard to get into the cage on its own. Night watch cameras are installed near the cages to monitor the leopard's activities and movement.

Forest officials have released footage of the leopard approaching the cage early this morning. The Coimbatore Regional Forest Conservator Ramasubramaniyam inspected the godown.

Addressing the press, he said forest veterinarians had confirmed that the leopard was the same which attacked dogs and was strolling in residential areas.

“The animal is speculated to be a 3-year-old male and we expect to catch it by tonight.” Ramasubramaniyam said.

He said that as the animal was hiding in an old godown, there is trouble injecting him with anesthesia sedation and therefore had no plans to inject him. He said he had decided to monitor the health of the leopard after its capture and then release the animal in to the dense forest area in the Coimbatore district.
