Guest workers want to stay in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts; Industrialists demand action against unwarranted rumors

Realizing the importance of industrial development and the livelihood of workers, the Tamil Nadu government has made it clear that there is currently no chance of enforcing a full curfew.

Coimbatore: Despite the spread of the coronavirus third wave and the 'Omicron' virus, workers from the north states who have been working in various industries in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts want to stay and work, the industry sources said.

Coimbatore District Minority Boundary Principals Association (COSMAFAN) President, A. Siva Shanmuga Kumar said, “More than 3-lakh guest workers are employed in various industries in Coimbatore district. Most of them have returned to their hometowns during the first and second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Returning to Coimbatore several months later, they resumed their work as usual.

The third wave of coronavirus and the spread of the 'Omicron' virus has caused new headaches for the industry as manufacturing companies, try to recover from the crisis caused by the spread of the disease.

In the case of the Coimbatore district, workers want to continue working in the foundry factories, which employ the largest number of workers (80%) from the North. In the coming days there is a chance for them to think about going to hometowns, if the third wave of coronavirus and the spread of 'Omicron' virus increases so much. But now no one is in the mood to go home."

Workers do not need to panic

Raja M, President, Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA). Shanmugam said, "More than 2-lakh guest workers are employed in various industries in Tirupur district. The crisis situation that arose during the second wave of pandemic is not present in the third wave. We hope that the same situation will continue in the coming days.

Isolation, even if infection is caused it can be cured by proper medical care. None of the guest workers are in the mood to return to their hometowns. Workers from the southern districts staying and working in Tirupur district due to the Pongal festival are returning to their hometowns by train and bus.

In view of this, unnecessary rumours are being spread that the workers from the northern states are returning to their hometowns. Thus, the police should take appropriate action against those who spread rumours and panic. Realizing the importance of industrial development and the livelihood of workers, the Tamil Nadu government has made it clear that there is currently no chance of enforcing a full curfew. So workers need not panic."
