'Covid-19' third wave impact: Only 687 tonnes of cargo handled in Dec. at Coimbatore International Airport

The spread of the Covid-19 third wave reduced 100 tonnes of cargo in December 2021 with further impact predicted during January 2022 and the upcoming months.

Coimbatore: Post 'Covid- 19' outbreak, during the first and second waves, flight movements and handling of cargo were badly affected at the Coimbatore International Airport. But in the past few months, the airport was slowly beginning to witness normalcy in flight operations.

But since the outbreak of the third wave of Covid-19 across the country, air services, and freight services began to get affected. Aviation sources say, "Usually each month, 1,000 tonnes of cargo would be handled at Coimbatore International Airport (800 tonnes in the Domestic sector and 200 tonnes in the International sector).

Post the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak, cargo handling at the airport got affected. Reduction in the infection rate, followed by effective vaccination drives across the nation and relaxations during the lockdown by the State and the Central Government helped cargo movements at the airport to witness steady growth. But the 'Covid-19' third wave has yet again affected air cargo movements at Coimbatore Airport.

During December, 687 tonnes of cargo were handled which includes 599 tonnes in the Domestic sector and 88 tonnes in the International sector. During November 2021, around 750 tonnes of cargo were handled. The third wave spread has reduced 100 tonnes of cargo in December. The impact would be furthermore during January 2022 and the upcoming months," predicted the aviation sources.
