The discovery of plastic waste in elephant dung in the Marudhamalai area of Coimbatore has come as a shock to wildlife enthusiasts.
The Western Ghats in the Coimbatore district is the habitat of a large number of elephants. The tuskers frequently trespass into agricultural lands and residential areas adjoining the forests in search of food and water. The jumbos consume vegetable waste dumped in garbage mounds. The elephants are at risk of health and loss of life due to the addition of plastic waste.
An inspection of elephant dung on the road leading to the Marudhamalai temple by a wildlife enthusiast, Muruganantham revealed the presence of plastic covers, face shields and napkins.
Speaking on the issue, Muruganantham said, “Despite our opposition, a garbage dump was set up in Somayampalayam village near Marudhamalai two years ago. Notices have also been issued from the forest department. However, the garbage dump could not be removed from this area.”
“Five elephants frequently come out of the forest and visit this garbage dump. We monitor them and drive them away. When elephants consume plastic regularly, they are more likely to die. This should be taken into consideration by the department officials and appropriate action should be taken to prevent the consumption of plastic waste by elephants.”
