Coimbatore: The Customs officers caught hold of 4 men who smuggled powdered gold through the anus from Sharjah at the city airport based on the secret tip-off.
Increased cases of gold smuggling through flights for the past few months has subsequently tightened the surveillance at the airport and the customs officers are in the process of nabbing the smugglers.
Flights are being operated from Coimbatore airport to other cities of India including Chennai, Bengaluru, and Delhi. A flight is operated to the Gulf state of Sharjah. The Central Revenue Intelligence Officials received information that gold was being smuggled on the Sharjah flight.
The authorities who kept a close watch on the passengers on board, interrogated four youths under doubt. Contradictory reply from them led to a further search. Investigations revealed that all the four carried powdered gold and smuggled it through the anus. They also carried bracelets and chains which were seized from them.
The accused are identified as Sakubhar Sadik Syed Mohammed, Nazaruddin Mohammed Thambi, Khalis Rahman Mustafa, and Dastagir Khajamogaideen of Ramanathapuram. The melted gold weighing 2.2-kg worth ₹.1.10 crore.
The customs officers arrested all four and are carrying out investigations to identify persons who led them into smuggling.
