December flower draws tourists in Valparai; Indicates Christmas arrival

Valparai hills in is major tourist hub and crowds arrive from different places to visit the Sholayar Dam, Nallamudi Poonjolai, Vellamalai Tunnel, Nirar Dam, Pebble River, etc., Wild animals like leopards, elephants, bear and wild buffalo, deer are frequent visitors in the town.



An added attraction, the December flower or the Christmas flower season has commenced and has been attracting big crowds as these flowers are found only in the Western Ghats. The flowers are seen in white and light young purple. Beginning by the end of November, the flowers bloom enormously covering the forest in white.

These flowers are found in areas with tea plantations in the hilly region, and was brought up as a decorative plant during the British era while they set up a tea plantation. The flowers are more commonly witnessed in forest areas in comparison to homes.

Christians report that these flowers bloom in December as a sign of the infant Christ's birth and these flowers bloom and shed off at the end of December. The estate areas like Valparai, Karumalai, New Garden, Kavarkal, Rotti Kadai, Beverly Waterfall, Pachamalai, Karumalai, Urulikal areas are home to the flowers.
