IMAX Corporation expands footprint in India, to launch theatre in Coimbatore

In India, IMAX's first large-format screen opened in 2001, but the company struggled to expand. However, when the government became more open to promoting commercial growth, such as the construction of malls and Western-style multiplexes, things began to change.

Coimbatore: The IMAX Corporation is expanding its reach in India with the opening of a theatre in Coimbatore. The partnership will deliver the city's first IMAX theatre, as well as the first agreement between the worldwide entertainment technology business IMAX and Broadway Megaaplex, which is set to debut in the spring of 2022.

The IMAX Corporation and Broadway Megaaplex, a regional megaplex franchise, have announced a cooperation to build a new IMAX theater in Coimbatore. The project, which is set to debut in the spring of 2022, will offer the city's first IMAX theatre as well as the first collaboration between the global entertainment technology business IMAX and Broadway Megaaplex.

"We're thrilled to announce our first partnership with Broadway Megaaplex, a regional multiplex network in southern India, which will bring IMAX to a new preeminent megaplex location and expand our reach in India beyond only the largest cities," said Giovanni Dolci, IMAX's Chief Sales Officer. In 2018, IMAX announced plans to open nine new large-screen cinemas in India. With the addition of new IMAX theatres in 2018, India now has a total of 40 IMAX venues.
