Rescued elephant christened Rohini finds a new home in Elephant Welfare Camp in Trichy

The elephant, which was rescued from a private holder, was relocated from the Topslip area to the Elephant Welfare Camp after four years of care.

Coimbatore: So far, 28 domesticated elephants have been maintained at the Kozhikamuthi Training and Elephant Breeding Camp at the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve. Rohini, a 24-year-old female elephant, was taken to the Elephant Welfare Camp in Trichy.

The Madurai High Court branch judge has ordered the rescue and maintenance of the elephants that were sheltered in the temple and privately in 2018 on behalf of the state forest department. Following this, a female elephant sheltered by Yusuf in the Rajapalayam area was rescued and relocated to the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve. The elephant was taken to a Kozhikamuthi training camp in the Topslip area. Rohini, a female elephant rescued from private hands for four years from 2018 to the present, has been sheltered in the Topslip Kozhikamuthi camp.

In the meantime it is not optimal to have an elephant captured from a private place and maintain it as a breeding elephant in a training camp. The elephant named Rohini was taken away in a special vehicle carrying elephants from the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve Topslip Kozhikamuthi Training Elephant Breeding Camp last night at the behest of Chief Wildlife Conservator Sekar Kumar Neeraj to send the elephant to the Elephant Welfare Camp in Trichy immediately. It is to be noted that there are currently 27 elephants in the Topslip Kozhikamuthi camp which has so far maintained 28 domesticated elephants.
