NCSK Chief demands abolition of contract system for sanitary workers

The President of the National Commission of Safai Karamcharis who addressed the media after his meeting at the Tirupur District Collector's office demanded abolition of the contract system of sanitary workers.


Tirupur: The President of the National Commission of Safai Karamcharis, Venkatesan has demanded for the State Government to abolish the contract system in hiring sanitary workers.



The National Commission of Safai Karamcharis' President, Venkatesan who is on a three-day tour to Tamil Nadu attended a meeting with the officials of all the departments at the Tirupur Collectorate on the second day. Sanitary workers were also present at the meeting along with the officials.

Later addressing the media, the NCSK Chief stated that the grievances of sanitary workers have been collected and action will be taken to address them. Highlighting that the contract workers face increased issues, the President has directed the authorities to fix the improper payment of the sanitary workers' salaries.

A committee has been constituted to review the allegations on contractors and necessary action will be taken as soon as the reports are received.

The NCSK head placed three demands on the State Government namely:

1. Abolition of contract system of labors

2. A committee headed by retired judges to ascertain the grievances of contract labourers and

3. A state-level commission for the sanitary workers.

The NCSK Chief further advised the authorities to conduct four awareness drives in a year to educate the labourers on the welfare benefits available for them.



Allegedly, the migrant sanitary workers are deducted ₹ 100 every day, and hence the NCSK Chief assured of steps to provide necessary wage and action against those involved in the crime. He assured that steps to obtain relief assistance to the families of the deceased frontline works due to Covid-19 will also be taken.
