Tirupur: Excess water from Thirumoorthy Dam has been released into the Palar river after 24 years.

The Thirumoorthy Dam, one of the reservoirs under the PAP is located near Udumalpet in Tirupur and divides about 4 lakh acres of land in Tirupur and Coimbatore into four zones and used for irrigation purposes by channeling the water through the Kandoor Canal. The water is utilized for drinking water projects for villages in Udumalpet municipality and Udumalpet Union, Kudimangalam Union area.

The incessant rainfall in the catchment areas of the dam has increased the inflow. As of this morning, the water supply to the dam has risen to 58.00 feet against 60 feet, and the flow is 1,145 cubic feet per second. 1010 cusecs of water are discharged from the dam to the 4th PAP Zone main canal, Udumalpet canal and for drinking water purposes.

Due to continuous rains, the surplus water from the Thirumoorthy reservoir has been opened into the Palar river, after 24 years now that the water is brimming in the dam. The reservoir last filled completely on November 5, 1997 and had since not reached full capacity for the past 24 years. However, a flood warning was issued on November 5th, 26th and 28th but the water in the river was not released due to reduced water supply.
