Citizen’s Voice Coimbatore (CVC) writes to TN CM on exploitation of vegetable prices

The Citizen’s Voice Coimbatore petitioned the TN Chief Minister on the exploitation of vegetable and essential commodity prices and demanded fruit pulp making factories establishment.

Coimbatore: The Citizens Voice Coimbatore (CVC) emailed a petition to Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, R. Sakkarapani State Minister for Food and Consumer Protection Department, V.Rajaraman State Commissioner of Civil Supplies & Consumer Protection Department and to V. Iraiyanbu Chief Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu, to bring to the notice of the CM of the state about the exploitation of vegetable and essential commodity prices. The Coimbatore-based Citizen’s Voice Coimbatore also demanded that fruit pulp-making factories are established in cities including Coimbatore.

According to the Essential Commodities Act, the prices of products have to be displayed in all shops selling them. The same is not being followed at the shops. However, at supermarkets and big branded stores in the malls the price list of vegetables and essential commodities are on display. However, shops charge comparatively higher prices for groceries, fruits, and vegetables distressing the public. Similarly, the prices differ by a huge margin in other shops in comparison with the farmers market, the CVC stated in the petition.

The CVC along with NGO’s have urged the District Administration to look into the issue and have asked the PA (AGRI) and District Supply Officer for a solution. In the petition, they additionally requested for the establishment of fruit pulp-making factories in cities including at Coimbatore to prevent farmers from destroying tomatoes, during excess yields and curbing the sale of tomatoes at higher prices.

They have further requested to review the disbursement of ₹.2,500 for ration cardholders, as most recipients, they state, are from the economically stressed backgrounds and this amount will offer respite to the beneficiaries.
