Kovai Kulangal Padhukappu Amaippu questions planting of Lantena on banks; seeks removal of the plant

The Kovai Kulangal Padhukappu Amaippu demanded that the Corporation removes the Lantena plants from the banks of Valankulam.

Coimbatore: The Kovai Kulangal Padhukappu Amaippu wrote to the Commissioner of Coimbatore Corporation seeking removal of the Lantena (unni) plants from the banks of Valankulam in Coimbatore.

The Lantena (unni) plants have been planted in the banks of Valankulam in Coimbatore as part of the Smart City Project. However, the ornamental plant has a characteristic of rapid spread and encroaching on other species. Due to this, the forest department is making a multi-crore plan to remove the plants.

The Kovai Kulangal Padhukappu Amaippu demanded speedy removal of the flora as the seeds from this plant are likely to spread more through surplus water on river banks and agricultural lands and also through birds as they feed on them. The committee has demanded that these plants should be replaced with local species.

In addition, the nameplates on the plants in the park under the railway bridge on the Ukkadam-Sungam bypass have been placed with incorrect names. Instead of bamboo plants, a board has been printed as Maruthu (Arjuna Plant). Various other species, including Vennochi, kaya, coral kurinji, ginger, wild konji, vel vagai, kalli flower, water chillies have been given incorrect name boards, which is a major blunder as students and children visiting the place frequently are likely to be confused.

The lake protection committee demanded that such wrongful precedent be avoided.
