The residents near Trichy Road in Coimbatore fear severe destruction as water might flood into the residential areas due to the heavy rains caused by the Northeast monsoon.
Coimbatore: The Northeast monsoon in the past few weeks has caused floods in the Noyyal River. Several lakes in the city have touched their maximum capacity due to the incessant rains.
The Ukkadam Valankulam Lake located in the metropolitan center has reached its 100% capacity, flooding the Trichy Road. Public, locals, and motorists have a difficult time due to the water logging on the road.
The 160-acre Valankulam Lake has filled faster this year as the surplus water from Ukkadam Periyakulam was not blocked and the sewer canal flowing from Valankulam was blocked. This has led the public to fear flooding in residential areas adjoining Trichy Road.
The shutters at Valankulam have been temporarily opened and the water has been re-diverted to the Ukkadam Periyakulam. In addition, sandbags are stacked on a side of the water body and on the side of the Ukkadam Road.
The sandbags are however temporary prevention from water flowing on the road and the public in the vicinity has demanded that the corporation provides a permanent solution to this issue. They requested that the corporation takes steps to construct a proper outlet from Valankulam as the water will flood the roads only if there is any blockage in the sewage canal. The destruction of Amman Lake is also a cause for the flow of water on roads during heavy rains, state the public.
