United Nation Development Program (UNDP), Coir Consultant and Coir Board, Government of India, Member, S. K. Gowthaman said, "India continues to dominate the world in the coir industry sector. Presently India’s share is 60% in the world coir business. Indian coir products are exported to 125 countries.

In India, Before 'Covid- 19' Pandemic outbreak each year Rs 2,500 crores valued coir exports were done. In the domestic market Rs 8,000 crores valued business was recorded. The pandemic outbreak did not have a huge impact on this sector, unlike it had on other industry sectors. India’s domestic market coir business has increased to Rs 14,000 crores and Rs 4,000 in the exports market. This was possible only because of the continuing support provided by the central government.

Mr. Kuppuram is recently appointed as the Chairman for The Coir Board, Government of India.

Within two months he has visited all the places where coir industries are functioning. He has decided to strengthen coir industry domestic market as equal to export market. Coir Woven Geo Textiles plays a vital role in reducing global warming which is the big debated issue globally.

Coir Woven Geo Textiles helps to control the soil erosion which is caused due to heavy rains and various other reasons. In India every year more than 5 lakh metric tonnes of fertile soil is lost due to soil erosion.

Coir Woven Geo Textiles will help to control soil erosion. These products can be used in agriculture to store water. Coir Woven Geo Textiles also doubles up as a bonding material. This will also help in controlling landslides.

Despite having so many advantages, presently in India the usage of coir Woven Geo Textiles is very low. In Tamil Nadu only less than 1% usage is witnessed.

Request to Tamil Nadu Government

1. Government can use these Coir Woven Geo Textiles in the hills to control landslides.

2. Presently rocks are used to control the sea erosion on the coastal areas. Rather than using rock's. Government can use Coir Woven Textiles and Coco Logs to control sea erosion.

3. Government can use Coir Woven Geo Textiles in water bodies to control soil erosion. Presently America is importing these products from us and using them in their water bodies.

4. Farmers can use the Coir Woven Geo Textiles to strengthen the boundaries of lakes to save water and in their farm land to protect the fertility of the soil. This will also help to increase the ground water level.

Above all the Tamil Nadu Government should create more awareness about Coir Woven Geo Textiles which will also help to provide 1 lakh new job opportunities. If the state government shows interest and take action, within one year the Coir Woven Geo Textiles usage In Tamil Nadu will increase to 10%. This will also automatically help to control global warming, landslides etc., in a big way" He said.
