Natives face hardship as BSNL telecommunications network is poor in Tamil Nadu Tea Plantation Corporation area near Valparai

As telecommunications are non functional, the public is unable to call the forest department when elephants encroach in to the residential settlements at night.

Coimbatore: The public and school children in the Valparai area of Coimbatore district have been facing difficulties due to the non-functioning of the BSNL service for some years.

In areas around Valparai, like Upasi, Chinnakallar Periyakallar, Cinchona and Ryan in the Cinchona Division under the Tamil Nadu Tea Estate Corporation more than 5,000 workers live and another 200 children go to school. The Valparai Government Arts College, located in the vicinity is operational for the past two years.

The natives of the area are suffering due to the increase in the movement of wild elephants in the Cinchona Estate area. As telecommunications networks are not working the residents are unable to call the forest department officials if elephants trespass in to the residential settlements at night. The natives also find it impossible to chase away the elephants into the wild on their own.

Rajendran, who lives in the area, says that the students of the school are not able to participate in the online class, due to telecommunication network issues. Against the backdrop of the hardships that the residents of the area have to go through, the public has demanded that the Government of Tamil Nadu renovates the BSNL service center in Valparai. The natives also demanded that staff strength is increased to make sure that the BSNL service office functions smoothly.
