Amma Unavagam: Why Chapati, a healthy option at dinner time has been replaced with Tomato rice...? questions Kamal Haasan

Kamal Haasan from Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) requests the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to ensure that the Government of Tamil Nadu ensures that Amma Restaurants continue to function in a healthy and efficient manner.

Coimbatore: Amma Restaurants predominantly serves the poor and simple people. There number of people who depend on the food offered here at affordable prices has multiplied after Coronavirus.

Inspired by Amma restaurants operating in Tamil Nadu, some state governments are trying to implement the same concept in their respective states.

The DMK government had also announced that "There is no intention of abandoning Amma restaurants". However, reports that Amma Restaurants in Chennai have made changes and are cutting staff are worrying.

For dinner in Amma restaurants ‌, chapati was prepared. It is useful for government hospital patients, diabetics and the elderly. Now, in a sudden change, tomato rice is being offered instead of chapati. Also, there are sudden layoffs and relocations of employees working in Amma restaurants. Corporation officials say the media is enforcing this through a verbal order.

"The reason for these practical changes is that the Amma restaurant is running at a loss," they say. While there are many ways for the Corporation of Chennai to increase its revenue, it is not in the interest of the people and the government to sabotage such good projects on the pretext of small losses. It should be noted that all the employees and beneficiaries who will benefit from this scheme are from the grassroots of the community. When food is one of the basic life-sustaining key of human beings, government agencies should not hesitate to spend on a project that will provide it at a lower cost. The Chief Minister, Mr. MK Stalin, had promised that the "Amma Restaurant Project" would continue to be operating without a change of name.

But reports from people state that's just what's happening. The government can be proud of the fact that it has implemented this plan, which is starving the poor, better than previous rulers. On behalf of the Makkal Needhi Maiam, he requested the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to ensure that the Government of Tamil Nadu continues to ensure that Amma Restaurant continues to function in a healthy and efficient manner.
