Coimbatore: Corporation Commissioner informed that 23 microbial composting centers are all set to commence operations in Coimbatore Corporation.

There are more than 4,500 streets in the 100 wards of the Coimbatore Corporation in which more than 1,500 garbage collecting bins have been placed. Nearly 800 to 1,000 tonnes of waste from these crowded residential areas are collected and sent to the Vellalore dumpyard.

To reduce the amount of waste that is being dumped at the Vellalore dump yard, microbial composting centers have been set up in 69 places in the Corporation. More than 40 small goods carrier vehicles have been purchased out of the planned 102 to collect segregated (biodegradable and non-bio degradable) waste fromhomes. Due to this the amount of wastes being dumped at the Vellalore dumpyard will be reduced significantly. With 23 centers ready for operation, the remaining will be completed soon,

Speaking regarding this, Corporation Commissioner P. Kumaravel Pandian said, "The task of setting up 23 microbial compost centers has been completed. Out of this, five of them have come into use. The task of setting up the remaining centers will be completed soon."
