Several efforts made to treat elephant injured for over 7 months near Mettupalayam

Several efforts are being made to treat an elephant that is carrying an injury for over 7 months. A 20-year-old male elephant was spotted with swollen left foreleg and difficulty walking by the forest workers at the Sundampatti Beat Nellithurai Reserve Forest in Mettupalayam in the mid of March this year.

A veterinarian went into the dense forest on March 24 and examined the wound on the elephant's leg from a distance. As per the doctor's recommendation, powdered pills were placed inside fruits and kept in the path of the elephant in the forest. Surveillance cameras were installed and the elephant's movements were monitored.

The forest officials led by Mettupalayam Ranger Selvaraj are actively monitoring the elephant on the orders of District Forest Officer Venkatesh as forest activists request that the elephant be given proper treatment in a timely manner. A team of 5 doctors has been formed under Veterinarian Sukumar. The medical team that visited the wild elephant has decided to treat it with anesthetics. The team say that it was impossible to monitor the wild elephant in forests and that it could only be treated if it reached the plains.

A team of forest officials led by District Assistant Forest Ranger Dinesh monitored the elephant in the Nellithurai area with a drone camera. The elephant is fed nutritious foods by placing them on its path to prevent infection.

Two Kumki elephants have been brought from Topslip and Sadivayal to prevent any untoward incidents during the treatment. The district assistant forest ranger said that the special medical team is ready to start treatment immediately when the injured elephant returns to the plains.
