A six-and-a-half-year-old male leopard with a face and head injury was rescued by the forest department after falling into a ravine on May 16 in Ooty region of the Nilgiris district. On finding that the big cat's nervous system was affected, they treated it locally a few days and sent it to Vandalur Zoo Chennai on June 5.
The medical team at the zoo found that the leopard had problems with eyesight and walking. Emergency treatment was initiated but to no avail. The leopard started developing more complications and eventually suffered kidney damage. This was followed by a consultation with experts from the University of Wildlife Medicine. However, the leopard died at 5.30 pm on Thursday.
