Students forced to sweat it out in summer

‘Many schools in Coimbatore conduct summer classes in violation of the government order’.

North of Thudiyalur, in a private school students are attending classes. The students with their uniforms on are those who are passing out of Plus One and entering Plus Two. They along with Class X students are the only ones in the school as students of other classes enjoy summer holidays.

There are many such schools in Coimbatore that conduct summer classes in violation of the government order, says civil society activists K. Kathirmathiyon.

Both forenoon, afternoon classes

Private matriculation schools conduct classes both in the forenoon and afternoon for students of the two classes so that they could complete the syllabi by December, in time for the half-yearly examinations and thereafter start series of revision examinations before the March-April public examinations.

A student of the private school says that the classes have been going for about a month now.

Mr. Kathirmathiyon says that he has received complaints from parents that the schools not only ask the students to attend the special classes but they insist that the students go wearing dresses other than uniform.

In some cases, the schools also take letters from parents to make it appear so though the parents were sending the students to school on their own volition.

This was nothing but a half-clever strategy by the schools to escape punishment, if any, from the School Education Department.

School Education Department officials say that the Department has clearly instructed private matriculation schools to not conduct any such special class for Class X or Plus Two students.

On May 2 this year they sent the circular saying that consequent upon on a direction from the Director of School Education such classes should not be held.

It not stopped with just sending the letter but also asked the private matriculation schools - there are 277 of them in the district - to send a written assurance that they would not do so.

The officials say that the schools have responded in writing.

But even after the schools sent the written assurance that they would not conduct summer special classes, the Department did receive complaints and it had followed up each of the complaint to ensure that the order was complied with.

They add that as of now there was no complaint of schools functioning.

Mr. Kathirmathiyon says that the Department should not remain content with the letter but conduct surprise checks in school so that there is no violation and students are not put to misery.
