Unable to conceive, city woman attempts suicide

A 24-year-old woman attempted to commit suicide by immolating herself on Friday early morning. According to police, she wasdepressed over her inability to conceive and might have taken the extrme step because of the same. She had also quarrelled with her husband the previous night. Her husband too suffered burns when he attempted to save her.

According to the police, Hamsaveni, and her husband, Pugazhendhi, residing in Indira Nagar, Sowripalayam, had been married for 18 months. Hamsaveni had been a house wife and Pugazhendhi holds a post in the DMK wing in the district. The couple's inability to have a child even after being married for more than a year had started troubling Hamsaveni. "On Thursday night, Hamsaveni had told Pugazhendhi that they should go to a temple, which infertile couples popularly visit, on Friday. However, Pugazhendhi had refused saying he was busy with election results," said a police officer..

A fight erupted over this issue. Hamsaveni's parents visited their home at night to console her and help sort out the issue. "The parents told us that they managed to pacify Hamsaveni before they left," said the officer.

However, on Friday early morning, Pugazhendhi realised he was breathing in smoke while sleeping. When he woke up he saw Hamsaveni in flames and tried to save her. Immediately the neighbours were alerted and the couple was admitted into Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Police said Hamsaveni sustained 90% burns and was unlikely to survive. Pugazhendi suffered only 25% burns and is likely to recover. An RDO enquiry will be issued because the couple was married for less than seven years.
