Civic body charts out action plan to protect Coimbatore from flood

With heavy rainfall predicted in the city for the next three days, the city corporation has come up with a comprehensive action plan to ensure that the city does not get flooded.

Officials have identified 67 low lying areas in the city and also set up relief centres in 22 schools, 11 marriage and seven community halls to meet any eventuality. Four railway under bridges have also been identified and the drains have been de-silted.

"We are ready with machinery, plan and also adequate measures to face the monsoon season," said a senior corporation official.

The civic body held a meeting with all the engineers and has identified 16 locations that were affected by rain during the last monsoon. Apart from setting up relief centres, they have also made a junior engineer in charge of that ward. Cooks have been identified who would be called in if there is an emergency situation.

"We have identified 9 locations in west zone, 14 in north zone, 7 in east zone, 13 locations in south zone and 24 locations on central zone. We have also taken a census of the number of houses, families and people in these locations. In every location a school or a marriage hall or a community hall has also been identified where they would be shifted," said the city engineer, Rajendiran. These are marked as vulnerable zones prone to inundation due to flood.

Apart from this, the civic body has fixed faulty motors in four underpasses, including the avinashi road flyover, Kikani school underpass, Lanka corner and Kaleeswara mill road rail under pass. "The gravity drains and other drainage system has been de-silted as well in these four locations. Five sullage lorries and pumpsets have been kept in each zone. Private gen-sets and oil engines have also been hired. Two tree cutting saws have been kept in the main office for relief measures," said an engineer.

He added that 2,500 sand gunny bags have also been purchased and kept in 40 relief centres that have been identified.

"All our medical teams are ready and they have stocked up disinfectants, emergency medicines and other first aid kits," said a senior corporation official adding that they were ready to face the monsoon season and would ensure that no untoward incidents take place.

As per prediction, monsoon is expected to set in the first week of June and the city will get close to 65mm of summer showers until May 30. So far, only 60mm of the total 130 mm of rain has been received in the city since March.
