The enquiries for admission to the top colleges in the city, both under the merit and management quota, have picked up pace with only a week left for the Class 12 state board results. On their part, colleges are trying to reach out to as many students as possible to fill seats under the management quota.
In private arts and science colleges, 50% of seats are reserved for merit quota, while in engineering colleges 65% of the total seats is merit based. Coimbatore is known for engineering colleges and top private engineering colleges said they receive on an average 50 enquiries a day.
In fact, some colleges have filled 90% of seats under the management quota a month back. "We generally start admissions early at Kumraguru College of Technology (KCT). Candidates fill in their application forms for the courses, but the admission is confirmed only based on Class 12 results. It is mandatory for them to get a certain minimum cut-off," said joint-correspondent of KCT, Shankar Vanavaryar.
Among management quota students, Shankar said, there is a high demand for computer science course this year, followed by mechanical and electronics and communication engineering.
However, at Sri Krishna Institutions the demand is for mechanical engineering. The chief executive officer of Sri Krishna Institutions, K Sundararaman, said as usual mechanical engineering tops the priority among candidates enquiring about management quota admissions. "The second choice for them is mechatronics, followed by electronics and computer science engineering courses," he said.
Sri Krishna has been reaching out to students for the past one month, and it receives 40 enquiries a day for engineering and an equal number of enquiries for arts and science. "When it comes to arts, there is a high demand for B.Com course," Sundararaman said.
When it comes to reaching out to students, SNR Group of Institutions tops the chart. It has already reached out to more than 40,000 students to get the seats filled. "We have participated in educational fairs across the state and have reached out to students in remote areas in Dharapuram, Eerode and Tiruppur," said a spokesperson for the college. "We have created a database of students and are sending them WhatsApp messages, voice messages and mails to inform them about the free counselling being offered by us for choosing the right course," the spokesperson further said.
