Security to be tightened for bomb blasts anniversary

Around 960 police personnel will be deployed for security arrangements in the city on Sunday, when the 18th anniversary of the serial bomb blasts that rocked the city in 1998 claiming more than 50 lives and leaving hundreds injured is to be observed.

The police sources said that various political parties and Hindu outfits including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), Hindu Munnai (HM), Indu Makkal Katchi – Tamilagam (IMK) and Hanuman Sena have sought permission to pay their respect for the deceased on D.B. Road in R.S. Puram.

However, the police have not granted permission for the observance and have warned the cadre of arrest if they went ahead. While the observance despite denial of police permission is organised on D.B. Road every year, it is learnt that a Hindu outfit has planned to organise the observance in a new location.

No moral policing

Warning action against individuals and organisations trying to disturb normalcy by indulging in moral policing during the Valentines Day celebration on that day, the police have also warned of legal action against persons indulging in indecent behaviour under the pretext of celebration. The police personnel in civil clothes will be deployed at places of public congregation.
