Enact law to protect inter-caste couples

Sathi-maruppu Makkal Kootiyakkam, Tamil Nadu (a confederation of organisations against caste in Tamil Nadu) has urged the Central and State governments to enact laws to protect inter-caste couples.

A resolution passed at the ‘Sathi-veri Anava Padukolai Ethirpu Maanadu’ (conference to oppose honour killings), said that the governments should accept the recommendations of the Supreme Court, National Law Commission, and National Commission for Women and enact the law against honour killings.

The Tamil Nadu government should, without delay, implement the order passed by Justice Ramasubramaniam in the case filed by the confederation. The Government should also establish a commission to provide legal, social and economic protection to inter-case couples and take steps to provide special reservation for children of such couples. Plus, it should also bear the education expenses of such children, the confederation demanded.

It also sought ‘caste-less’ denomination for children of inter-caste couples and wanted the Government to not brand them under any caste, as it was now doing.

The resolutions the confederation passed included punishment for government officials who promoted manual scavenging and wanted the use of only machinery for cleaning toilets. The leaders who spoke at the meeting also sought amendments to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act to include the newer ways that caste Hindus insulted Dalits.

The speakers included CPI leader R. Nallakannu, Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam leader Kolathur Mani, Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam general secretary Ku. Ramakrishnan and a few others.
