Digital First Information Reports successful in Coimbatore

The city police officials said that computer generated first information report (FIR) was successful in the city as they had been following the system since April 1. The director general of police, Ashok Kumar, had sent out an order stating that all the 1,534 police stations and 375 special units including Crime Branch-CID in the state should issue computer generated FIRs from April 15.

"Since we began a trial from April 1, we did not face any major challenges. Some shortcomings were there which would be resolved soon," said Nisha Parthiban, deputy commissioner, law and order. As per officials, the Peelamedu crime police station did not have a Criminal and Crime Tracking Network and Systems computer (CCTNS) and hence had to get its FIR registered at the Peelamedu law and order station. Also, Singanallur police station faced some software issues. "But on the whole, the project has been successful," said an official.

The police department will soon train other officials apart from the police date entry operator (PDO) to work on CCTNS.

"Since each station has just one PDO we will ensure that all officials become equipped with the system and start using it efficiently," said Nisha Parthiban. This system has helped police officials save time as the officials would earlier issue a hand written FIR and later enter it into the system. "Now, we directly enter it into the system," she said.
