Kovai Foodies go on a food and heritage walk

Kovai Foodies is a group on Facebook that connects its members through its various events, the recent one being a food and heritage walk in Coimbatore.

This walk saw more than 30 participants visiting the heritage sites the city can boast of. They walked through the busy roads and by-lanes of Oppanakara Street, Vysial Street and Town Hall. Heritage buildings like Mercantile Bank building, Koniamman Temple, Victoria Town Hall were visited. They had with them historian Rajesh Govindarajulu to bring to light the story behind each of the heritage buildings.

The food walk was kick-started at the 127-year-old home of A.T. Thiruvenkatswamy Mudaliar. This house also doubled up as the official office of the Cosmopolitan Club. The group walked across the Koniamman Temple and savoured the famous ghee biscuits at the Balaji Bakery. The group of food enthusiasts made a stop at Kasinath Pharmacy. This is the same place that was given to freedom fighter Kovai Sabri by G. Kuppuswamy Naidu of Lakshmi Mills Group.

“Through Kovai Foodies we try and promote food through various events. We try to organise a different event every time. Sometimes we visit orphanages, we conduct cookery contests, we celebrate festivals and special occasions. However, this food and heritage walk was a different experience altogether,"" Lalitha Gautam, Founder of Kovai Foodies, says.
