Coimbatore Corporation has launched textile waste collection under the "Weave Again" program in Koundampalayam area under West Zone Ward 33. From August 26, 2026, sanitation workers will collect textile waste every Wednesday. Awareness has been created among 1200 households about responsible textile disposal and recycling.
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation has introduced a new textile waste management initiative in the Koundampalayam area under West Zone Ward 33. The "Weave Again" program was inaugurated by Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran on August 21, 2026, marking a significant step towards sustainable waste management in the city.
Starting from August 26, 2026, sanitation workers will conduct door-to-door collection of textile waste every Wednesday. Residents are requested to segregate their unused textile waste separately and hand it over to the sanitation workers during their weekly rounds. This systematic approach aims to streamline textile waste collection and ensure proper recycling.
As part of the program launch, a three-day continuous awareness campaign was conducted in the Koundampalayam area. Residents received detailed information about textile waste segregation, responsible fabric usage, reuse practices, and proper disposal methods. The initiative seeks to educate citizens about the environmental impact of textile waste and encourage sustainable practices.
The awareness drive covered multiple residential areas including SKR Nagar, Samundeswari Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Anna Nagar, Driver Colony, Chettithaar Amma Kadu, New Scheme Colony, and Koundampalayam residential zones. Information pamphlets were distributed to spread awareness about the new collection system and its benefits.
Grant Thornton Bharat LLP is implementing this project in collaboration with the Corporation and GIZ organization. The team conducted direct household visits to over 1200 homes, providing education on source segregation of textile waste, wardrobe mapping surveys, and responsible handling of unwanted clothing. This grassroots approach ensures maximum community participation.
Awareness programs were also organized at Coimbatore Corporation Primary School, Government Higher Secondary School Koundampalayam, and the government library under Ward 33. These sessions witnessed participation from over 600 students and teachers, creating awareness among the younger generation about sustainable textile waste management.
Zonal Health Officer Radhakrishnan, Health Inspector Rajendran, health supervisors, and sanitation workers provided excellent support for these programs. Their active involvement has been crucial in ensuring the smooth implementation of the initiative across the ward.
Corporation officials stated that this program will bring significant improvements in environmental protection and waste management by properly collecting and recycling textile waste.
