Heavy Rain Floods Homes in Tirupur, Residents Stage Road Blockade

Heavy rainfall in Tirupur caused flooding in Palavanchipalaiyam colony near Veerapandi police station. Residents staged a road blockade demanding a permanent solution to the recurring issue.

Tirupur: Heavy rainfall over the past two days has led to flooding in various parts of Tirupur city, particularly affecting the low-lying areas. The Palavanchipalaiyam colony near Veerapandi police station was severely impacted, with rainwater entering more than 40 houses in the area.

Residents reported that water levels rose to knee-height, causing significant distress, especially for families with young children. The situation was exacerbated by the recent construction of the new Veerapandi police station on elevated land near a pond, which allegedly caused water from the pond to overflow into the residential area.

Concerned about the recurring nature of this problem, especially with the onset of the monsoon season, over 100 residents from the affected area staged a sudden road blockade protest in front of the Veerapandi signal on the Palladam-Tirupur main road. The protest lasted for about 15 minutes, disrupting traffic flow.

Police officials and authorities engaged in negotiations with the protesters. Subsequently, senior officials, the Corporation Mayor, and the Tirupur South MLA visited the site for inspection. They assured the residents that appropriate measures would be taken to address the issue.

Following these assurances, the protesters called off their road blockade and dispersed. The brief protest had caused some traffic congestion in the area.

The residents emphasized the need for a permanent solution to prevent future flooding incidents in their neighborhood, particularly as the rainy season progresses.
