Pillur Dam Water Level Rises 5 Feet in One Day Due to Continuous Heavy Rainfall

Continuous heavy rainfall in Coimbatore district and hill areas has caused the water level in Pillur Dam to rise by 5 feet in a single day. The dam is currently receiving an inflow of 919 cubic feet per second.


Coimbatore: The water level in major dams of Coimbatore district continues to rise due to persistent rainfall in various parts of the district and neighboring hill regions, including Mettupalayam.

The Pillur Dam, a crucial drinking water source for Coimbatore and Tirupur districts, has seen a significant increase in its water level. In just one day, the water level has risen by 5 feet, primarily due to the continuous heavy rainfall in the Mettupalayam catchment areas.

The Pillur Dam, located near Mettupalayam, relies on rainwater from the Nilgiris district and parts of Kerala. The dam has a total capacity of 100 feet. As of 6 AM today (October 13), the water level in the dam stands at 91.50 feet, according to the latest reports.

The dam is currently receiving an inflow of 919 cubic feet per second. As of 6 AM today, there was no water release from the dam. Rainfall recorded in the catchment areas as of this morning are as follows: Kundah - 37 mm, Geddai - 46 mm, Parali - 28 mm, Pillur Dam area - 21 mm, and Avalanche area - 15 mm.

Last night (October 12) at 9 PM, the dam's water level was at 86.50 feet. Within just 9 hours, it has risen to 91.50 feet, marking a 5-foot increase in a single day.

With continuous heavy rainfall in the catchment areas, it is expected that the water level in the dam will continue to rise. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the inflow increases due to the ongoing rains in the Nilgiris and surrounding regions.
