Young Woman Dies of Rabies After Stray Dog Bite in Coimbatore

A 23-year-old woman from LGB Nagar, Saravanampatti, Coimbatore, died of rabies after being bitten by a stray dog three months ago. She had not taken the rabies vaccine after the incident.


Coimbatore: A tragic incident has come to light in Coimbatore where a young woman lost her life to rabies after being bitten by a stray dog. The 23-year-old victim, a resident of LGB Nagar in Saravanampatti, Coimbatore, had been feeding stray dogs in her area about three months ago when the unfortunate incident occurred.

According to sources, the young woman was feeding stray dogs in her locality when she encountered two dogs fighting. In the ensuing chaos, one of the dogs bit her. However, the victim did not seek immediate medical attention and failed to receive the crucial rabies vaccine following the bite.

The gravity of the situation came to light when the woman suddenly fell ill. Upon medical examination, it was discovered that she had contracted rabies. She was immediately admitted to a private hospital in Neelampur, Coimbatore, where she received intensive care treatment.

Despite the medical team's best efforts, the young woman succumbed to the disease on October 11. The incident has raised concerns about the management of stray dogs and the importance of immediate medical attention following animal bites.

The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation's health department officials have initiated an investigation into the incident. They are conducting on-site inspections and gathering information to understand the circumstances that led to this unfortunate death.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of timely vaccination and medical treatment following animal bites, particularly from stray dogs. Health officials urge the public to seek immediate medical attention in case of any animal bite and to complete the full course of rabies vaccination as prescribed by healthcare professionals.
