Vinayagar Idol Sales Slump in Udumalpet Worries Artisans

As Vinayagar Chaturthi approaches, Udumalpet artisans face a downturn in Vinayagar idol sales compared to last year. Craftsmen from Rajasthan are concerned about their livelihood with only two days left for the festival.

Coimbatore: With Vinayagar Chaturthi set to be celebrated on September 7th in the Udumalpet area of Tiruppur district, the production of Vinayagar idols in various forms is in full swing. Artisans from Rajasthan are meticulously crafting these idols using chalk powder and coconut fiber, molding them into shape, painting, and giving them the final touches.

The beautifully crafted idols are captivating the hearts of onlookers with their mesmerizing appearance. Priced between Rs. 100 and Rs. 10,000 based on their size, these idols are now displayed for sale along the streets of Udumalpet. While the public is enthusiastically purchasing these Vinayagar idols, the artisans express concern over the reduced sales compared to the previous year.

The craftsmen, who have invested their time and skills in creating these intricate idols, are worried about their livelihood. With only two days left for the festival, they are hopeful that sales will pick up, allowing them to sustain their families and continue their traditional craft.

The situation highlights the challenges faced by seasonal artisans who rely on festival-related sales for their annual income. The decrease in sales could be attributed to various factors, including economic conditions or changing consumer preferences. As the festival approaches, both the artisans and local authorities are keeping a close watch on the market trends, hoping for a last-minute surge in sales to support these skilled craftsmen.
