Women Should Be Encouraged to File Complaints Boldly; Law Supports Them - MLA Vanathi Srinivasan

MLA Vanathi Srinivasan urges women to report sexual harassment cases fearlessly, emphasizing legal support and the need for a conducive environment for complaint filing.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan has issued a statement expressing shock and distress over the recent spate of sexual violence against women. She highlighted several incidents, including the brutal rape of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata medical college, sexual harassment of students during a fake NCC camp at a private school in Krishnagiri, and the sexual abuse allegations in the Malayalam film industry.

Vanathi Srinivasan pointed out that despite this being a technological age where everything can be exposed, sexual harassment of women continues from sanitation workers to high-ranking officials. She questioned the audacity of these perpetrators and criticized the perception of women as mere objects of pleasure by some men, regardless of their education or position.

The MLA emphasized that women face sexual harassment in various settings, from educational institutions to workplaces, irrespective of their social or professional status. She cited the recent incident at NIT Trichy, where a contract worker sexually harassed a student who had cleared the challenging JEE exam.

Addressing the revelations of sexual misconduct in the Malayalam film industry, Vanathi Srinivasan expressed shock at the allegations made by actresses in the media. She stressed the importance of women being courageous in all situations and places, asserting that women have proven themselves equal to men in all aspects.

Vanathi Srinivasan urged women not to fear or tolerate sexual harassment and encouraged them to file complaints against perpetrators. She assured that the law is on their side and emphasized the importance of punishing offenders to deter future incidents.

The MLA called for institutions and the government to create an environment where women feel empowered to file complaints boldly. She concluded by stating that the punishment given to perpetrators would serve as a deterrent for others contemplating such actions.
