Awareness Marathon on Cyber Crimes Against Women Held in Coimbatore

A 5km awareness marathon on cyber crimes against women was organized in Coimbatore by V Wonder Woman, in collaboration with Karpagam University, drawing around 3,000 participants to promote online safety for women.

Coimbatore: An awareness marathon focusing on cyber crimes against women was held in Coimbatore. The non-governmental organization V Wonder Woman, in collaboration with Karpagam University, organized a 5 km awareness marathon for the fourth consecutive year in the city to highlight the issue of online crimes targeting women.

Subitha Justin, Managing Trustee, and Shanmugapriya, Trustee of V Wonder Woman, spoke about the event:

"With the growing advancement of information technology, cyber crimes in society are also on the rise. Specifically, cyber crimes against women continue to increase. Even when women are vigilant, they sometimes fall victim unknowingly."

They further explained that technology has made online crimes against women more prevalent, causing significant social and economic problems globally. It is estimated that from the age of fifteen, one in ten women has experienced online violence, making it one of the most common forms of cyber crime against women.

The organizers highlighted that cybercriminals often target women to collect their personal and critical information such as financial details, addresses, and private conversations. Women are 27 times more likely to be harassed online than men, making them frequent targets for cybercriminals.

The awareness marathon, named "Freedom Run," aims to educate women about these issues and promote vigilance. This year's event saw about 3,000 pre-registered participants, including men, women, and children.

The marathon was flagged off by Cyber Security Specialist Sankara Subramanian, V Wonder Woman's Managing Trustee Subitha Justin and Trustee Shanmugapriya, Dr. Amutha, Dean of Karpagam University, Dr. Kumar Chinnaiah, Principal of Karpagam College of Engineering, Dr. Adi Pandian, Public Relations Officer of Karpagam Educational Group, and Dr. Suman, Sports Injury Specialist from VGM Hospital.

The race started from Nehru Stadium, proceeded through ATT Colony, Madurai Polytechnic, Anna Statue, and returned to Nehru Stadium. All participants received medals, certificates, T-shirts, and breakfast.

The organizers emphasized that the police are very supportive in such cases, but many affected women in society hesitate to file complaints. They stressed the importance of raising awareness and implementing safety measures to create a safer online environment for all.
