Coimbatore Airport Expansion: Collector Grants 'Enter Upon' Permission for 470 Acres

Out of the total 627.89 acres earmarked for the expansion, 470 acres are now being handed over to the AAI to kickstart the expansion work. The remaining land includes approximately 130 acres of defense land, which will be transferred once a formal MoU is signed between the TN state govt and Defense Authorities. Remaining private lands are expected to be closed in couple of weeks.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District Collector has granted 'enter upon' permission to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) for 470 acres of private and poramboke land, marking a significant milestone in the Coimbatore Airport expansion project.

Out of the total 627.89 acres earmarked for the expansion, 470 acres are now being handed over to the AAI to kickstart the expansion work. The remaining land includes approximately 130 acres of defense land, which will be transferred once a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is signed between the Tamil Nadu state government and Defense Authorities. This agreement is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, along with the acquisition of some private lands, according to the Coimbatore District Collector.

The Coimbatore Airport expansion project has a long history dating back to 2009 when the initial plan was prepared by the Government of Tamil Nadu and the AAI. The current airport spans 440 acres with a runway length of 9,900 feet. The expansion aims to extend the runway to 12,000 feet, enabling the landing and takeoff of wide-bodied and fat-bellied aircraft.

Over the years, the project has faced various challenges, including land acquisition issues and changes in the required land area. In 2010, the government finalized the acquisition of 613 acres, reduced from the initial proposal of 848 acres. The land price negotiation meeting held in April 2018 set the value at ₹1,500 per square foot for residential land and ₹900 per square foot for agricultural land.

The Tamil Nadu government has allocated a total of ₹2,088 crore for land acquisition, with ₹1,848 crore already distributed to landowners as compensation. The remaining 3% of land under dispute will have the compensation amount deposited in court, to be released to rightful owners once ownership disputes are resolved.

In a recent development, the state government has decided to hand over the acquired patta and government poramboke land to AAI free of cost, without any conditions, on a 99-year lease. This decision is expected to accelerate the expansion process and pave the way for enhanced air connectivity in Coimbatore.

The expansion project includes plans for new terminal buildings on the southern side of the runway, with new approach roads from Chinniayampalayam on Avinashi Road and through the SIHS colony from Trichy Road. This expansion is poised to significantly boost Coimbatore's aviation infrastructure and economic potential.
